Meet Jess Klein

Singer-songwriter Jess Klein – whom the New York Times calls "a songwriter with a voice of unblinking tenacity" – has always used music to dream her way forward. Over multiple decades and 11 albums, Klein has pursued a creative evolution that has seen her delve into her own empowerment for emotional insights, while continuing to refine her eloquently melodic, effortlessly accessible song–craft.

Q+A

What do you do with your rage?

Channel it into music and hard exercise, like Jiu Jitsu and Zumba.

What gets you through a rough day?

Writing.  Talking to friends.  Taking action in community.  Taking a bath.  Binge watching something with strong women characters.

Pet peeves?

Loud sneezers.  Washed out vegetables in the sink trap.  People talking to me during movies; I’m trying to get lost in the story!

Who helped get you here?

June Howe, my voice teacher when I was just getting started, living in Boston.  She taught me that singing was a full body experience.  I needed to know that to really access my full voice and range of emotions and let them rip onstage.

What do you hope will be different by this time next year?

I hope social media disappears or is replaced by something less icky.  I hope we are hanging out IRL and/or in supportive online community.  I hope we dismantle the systems that keep us chained to feeling small and squabbling over a tiny slice of pie.  I hope people learn how powerful we really are and start using it to care for each other.
