Meet Melissa Blount
Melissa Blount is a licensed clinical psychologist, writer, and artist who creates textile pieces that explore the notions of trauma, white supremacy and violence against Black cis and transgender women. Through community sewing circles, she cultivates unique opportunities for people to bear witness to the unjust and violent loss of life in communities of color. Melissa is also a passionate community activist and volunteer in Evanston. She was a founding member of both MEET (Making Evanston Equitable Together) and OPAL (organization for Positive Action and Leadership). Melissa currently serves as an Advisory Board member for the James B. Moran Center for Youth Advocacy.
Q + A
When do you feel most at peace?
I feel most at peace anywhere there is sun, warm water, hot weather, few bugs and not a lot of people
How long do you think you would survive the zombie apocalypse? Why?
I would last a pretty long time because I am obsessed with surviving the zombie apocalypse. I'm constantly thinking about what survival skills are needed, what would be the best way to dress/travel. How do you make soap, clothes, baskets? How do you grow crops? And how to fight. And how to create community. I'm also fascinate with the idea of having to start over from scratch and that the playing field is even because we are all operating from one goal and that's how do you stay alive.
Favorite word?
Everyone who knows me, knows my favorite word is FUCK
What do you suck at?
I suck at forgiveness but I'm working on it.
What do you hate?
White supremacy
